General,
In obedience to your order to Major R B Hurt Military Superintendent of R Road directing a special agt to be dispatched to Meridian to look after certain ordnance stores, marked to Col. Hunt en rout from Vicksburg to Columbus Miss. having been charged with this duty, I proceeded on the 3rd inst to the former place and on arriving ascertained that said stores, consisting of thirteen car loads, had been delayed at Meridian for several days, but had been forwarded to their point of destination on Monday the 28th ult. The agt of the M. & O. R Road {Mobile & Ohio RR} informed me this delay was unavoidable in consequence of all the trains during that time being heavily loaded with either Government stores or Troops. That he proposed detaining the trains containing the stores and attaching them to passenger trains, but the officer in charge was unwilling to such arrangements and in consequence time of their transportation was necessarily postponed. The Statement of the Agent of the Southern R. Road concurs with the above.
Respectfully General
Your obt Servt
