Dear Sir, |
If either Harry or Charley is disengaged
and would like to join my party on the surveys {of
the Shelby & Broad River RR}, I need hardly say that it
would give me pleasure to have one of them with me. Whoever comes
however must make up his mind to have fare & hard work. The RRd Co
pays the expenses of the party while on surveys & location. I have
been assisted thus far by some gentlemen Mr Cameron sent up before I
had arrived. |
They are still with me, but I can very
well make room for another person. The salary will not be very large
(about $50 per month) until he is capable of using the
instruments. |
If they decide to come, the route will be
to Columbia, thence to Chester, then to Yorkville {York,
SC} at which place a buggy is hired at Whittaker & Gore's
stables to carry him to the works of the Magnetic Iron Company; at
Cherokee Ford, on Broad River, about 25 miles distant from Yorkville {about
6 miles east of Gaffney, SC}. After arriving at the Works, stop
at the house of Mr. A. M Latham (who is superintendent of the works of
the Magnetic Iron Co) and from him will learn my location. I make my
head quarters & office at Mr Latham's house. |
I have been quite well though very busy
since I arrived. Mrs H is now in Savannah under the care of Dr Schley.
Her health is about the same as when she was in Charleston. |
I hope that I may be able to visit
Charleston for a few days after or about the middle of next month. |
If either Charlie or Harry decide to come
up they will want to leave as soon as possible. |
very little clothing is required |
I trust that Mrs Walker's health is good
& also your family and yourself Please remember me most kindly to
all at home. |
Most truly yours |
