This is to certify that on the 12th day
of May 1862, by order of Major J. L. Locke Chief Commissary I left
Savannah Georgia and proceeded to Jackson Miss to look for (in
conjunction with Mr. Dupane) and have them forwarded to Savannah
& Station No. 3, Central Rail Road near Savannah 50 Hhd's Sugar
& 135 Barrels of Molasses said to have been invoiced to Major
Locke by Major J. H. Clairborne C. S. Richmond Va. On arriving at
Jackson I found the molasses there -- it had been lying out exposes
to the weather for over two months, which no doubt accounts for the
leakage of 1420 gallons. About 20 miles above Jackson 27 Hhd's sugar
were found in the cars where I was informed they had been for some
time. 18 Hhd's more were found at Jackson, the agent there informed
me they had been lying out in the woods near the Rail Road track
some distance from Jackson and on being discovered by him were
removed to Jackson. I could not find nor hear of any more &
therefore returned to Savannah. The 45 Hhd's sugar and 135 Barrels
molasses did not reach their destination until the month of June. |
