General, |
An order came in here to day
to impress all the rope large or small at Tombigbee Bridge {on
the Alabama & Mississippi Rivers RR}. The order came from
Capt W. S. Morris Chief Engr and I suppose for pontoon purposes. I
write to request that this order be countermanded. The rope we have
here, is too small for shear lines of pontoons, and was selected
especially to fit the pullies used in raising bridges and it is the
only set of tackle to be had in the Department for this purpose.
Although we may not need it at Tombigbee bridge, there will be other
bridges to raise and I am exceedingly desirous to preserve one set for
purposes of this king. If this rope is taken, it cannot be supplied
again & should it be necessary to raise any bridges in future, as
it surely will be, there will be great difficulty in doing it. I am
informed the Qr Master Dept. has a large amount of rope, which can be
twisted into larger sixes if required. I therefore respectfully
request that the rope at the bridge be left in my possession for the
purposes indicated. |
Please instruct me if I must
discontinue the work on Tombigbee Bridge. |
Respectfully |
