Dear Sir, |
I see by the Richmond papers
that you have offered a resolution instructing Com Military Affairs to
"whether further legislation is necessary to give increased
efficiency to our interior lines of Rail Road." I have had
considerable experience in transportation over the lines of Rail Road
from Chattanooga via Augusta & Wilmington, Augusta & Raleigh,
& Knoxville & Lynchburg, & from what I can perceive much
of the delay & inefficiency is caused by the desire on the part of
officials to put freight through on their own account in order
to realize the heavy profits occurring therefrom. Another great cause
is the want of harmony that exists between connecting Roads,
whereby many unnecessary detentions taker place. Their capacity is
much greater than their actual performance, & I think you would
greatly subserve the interest of the Government by a thorough
investigation of their management by some one capable & honest enough
to report fully on the subject. I understand Dr Lewis of Georgia, who
is well known to Delegation of that State, has resigned in disgust at
the character of the persons who were associated with him (by Election
of Directors) in the management of East Tenn & Va RR from Bristol
to Knoxville. |
You can command the services
of a proper Rail Road ??? to investigate these matters, if you desire
to do so by applying to Bently D Hasell at present on the Charleston
& Savannah RR Co. He is a relative of Senator Wigfall, who can
probably inform you more particularly in regard to him. My own desire
is that you should successfully prosecute your inquiries, & for
that purpose address you this letter. I seek no employment from
Government & would accept none unless without salary & under
an impression of duty. |
Very Respy Yours |
