While as Govt Agent in charge of 58 pcks
and Bale of wool I came from Kingsville S. C. on Manchester and
Wilmington R. R. one of the packages, placed in a car with open doors,
was at night ripped open, and I think about 150 pounds of wool stolen
from it. As soon as ascertained I notified Superintendent of the W. & M.
RR of the loss in writing, and that his road would be held responsible. |
I also report: That Wilmington & Weldon R. R. by their
freight bill acknowledged receipt of 58 Bales & Pcks of wool from
Wilmington & Manchester R. R. and that (cars being loaded through to
Petersburg) Weldon & Petersburg R. R.
{Petersburg RR} did the same; but that at Petersburg I, and RR
agt could only count out 57. Where this loss occurred, I cannot
positively state: as having the proper voucher, I did not recount
until I reached Petersburg. From Petersburg to Richmond I brought 57
Bales and pcks. which with one Bale or pckg lost or stolen at Murphy &
one lost or stolen between Wilmington & Petersburg makes up my 59 the
number I left Mobile with. The weight of wool thus lost I estimate
about 300 lbs. |
