Dear Sir, |
Major Maynard, QM Richmond, holds four
thousand pounds of straw, subject to your order. Every effort will be
made to bring here, at an early day, several hundred bales of straw,
by the {Richmond &}
Danville road, on which has been waiting shipment for weeks past in
Depots on its line. Major Randolph QM has been directed to bring to
this city at the earliest day practicable 200,000 pounds of straw {12
or 13 carloads}. The above straw will be
consigned to Major Maynard but is designed for Hospitals and this
officer will hold the same on its arrival subject to your order. Straw
is unfortunately ??? past as long forage and a good deal used on the
line of the James river & R Canal by the Nitre and Mining Bureau.
In view of the facts and the great difficulties connected with rail
road transportation to this city, and, the scarcity of straw north of
James River and this side of the Valley of Virginia, I respectfully
suggest such a reduction of your estimates as in your judgment &
the interest of your Department will permit. |
Very Respectfully |
Your obt Servant |
Chas. S. Carrington |
Maj & QM |
