Major, |
Mr. John W Moore has been in my employ
since early in May last; (1862) he was originally a Lieut in a
Volunteer Company which was disbanded; during the evacuation of
Norfolk & Portsmouth & when I had the immense stores there to
remove he volunteered his services and came out in charge of my wagon
train, was with me in the field, and subsequently with me in the
Trans-Mississippi Department; I have known him from his youth &
knew him to be a gentleman of strict integrity & great moral
worth, with fine business capacities as his success as a merchant in
Norfolk, prior to the war, will attest. |
My duties keep me almost constantly from
my office, for the past three months I have not been there as many
days, and I must have some one in charge of it in whom I have
unlimited confidence and that I can rely upon to perform the necessary
work during my absence, and to whom I can entrust the public funds for
which I am responsible under my official Bond; you know enough
about my duties to know the importance of my retaining Mr. Moore and
as he comes under the recent order of the A. & I. General I
respectfully ask that he be either appointed a transportation agent
(Bonded if you please) and ordered to report to me for duty, or a Capt
& AQM for which he is fully competent, or if nothing else that he
be detailed to so report for clerical duty. He is my only clerk. I
know of no one whose services I can secure in whom I can place the
same confidence, and if I did, have not the time from my other duties,
to instruct into the details & duties of the office. If Mr. Moore
is taken from me much that is now done must go undone. |
Be pleased to let me hear from you early
upon this subject & I am |

Very Respectfully |
