Sir, |
We are in great need of carpenters to keep up the repairs of
our cars and bridges, and I will thank you to get J. W. Newman, Corporal in
Co. C, 20th Battalion, Heavy Artillery, Battery No. 9, near Richmond,
detailed to work on our bridges, he is a practical bridge builder, and can
be of great service to us. |

Respectfully referred to A&IG and would recommend the detail. The freight
cars are much mutilated by the troops to bet ventilation. It is a necessity
& the roads do not complain, but want the carpenters to make repairs and
cant get them outside of the army. The bridges on this road also need
attention as a disaster to them, or any one of them would be attended with
the most serious consequences. |

I can in no manner consent to the detail of Corpl J. W. Newman of my company
as he is one of my most efficient non. comm. officers. |

It is sufficiently injurious to take Privates from a command but to remove
the non comd officers after they have learned their duties & exerting a
wholesome influence over the discipline of the command appears to me to be
ruinous. Many mechanics have put field from Chattanooga is there not a
Bridge builder among them? |
