Colonel, |
Yours of the 20 ult, enclosing a letter to
the Quartermaster Genl, also yours the 12 inst are to hand and contents
carefully noted. |
I certainly should have been much pleased,
if it had been in the power of the Quartermaster Genl to have granted
the appointment ask by your humble servant, but while the appointment
could not be made without a violation of established rules, I am truly
glad to learn through you that it was not for the want of attention to
the interest of the government that had any influence in the matter. |
For the interest you have taken in my
behalf recently, I shall ever feel myself under lasting obligations to
you for, and the only fear that I have in the whole matter is, that you
have placed too high an estimate upon my humble abilities or willingness
at all times to attend to business. |
But as I have said to you before, I again
assure you that the noble soldier in Virginia shall have day and night
my very best efforts at this point at all times in forwarding supplies
on to Virginia. |
Wishing for you a continuation of health
and happiness |
I Remain |
Yours Very Truly &c |
James Wheless |

PS When you come west, I should be pleased if you would
call & see me. |
