Colonel, |
Enclosed herewith you will please find two
letters, one from Col. G. P. Smith one of our first business men from
Tennessee, and for a great while President of the Bank of Tennessee at
Nashville. |
The other letter is from Maj. Jno S.
Bransford, QM of the Army of Tenn & well known to the Quartermaster
Genl. I could send you any number of letters from the best men we have
from my state, but I dont see why two should not do as well as a
thousand, for they cover the entire case. |
I will take it as a special favor if you
will see Genl Lawton, and learn if a position can be obtained in the QM
Dept for me. Should the above request be granted, I will make it my
business to see that the trust is never abused. Shall be pleased to hear
from you upon the subject. I trust that you will pardon me for the
trouble I am giving you. |
Your truly &c |

Owing to several spinal affliction, I am
not able to stand camp life, and was detailed by Lieut. Genl. Longstreet
last winter while in the mountains of East Tenn, and assigned to duty
