Dear Sir, |
Desiring to occupy some recognized
position in the service of my country, I have presumed upon an acquaintance
of several years to address you upon the subject of my wishes. I
resigned my position as Capt in the 25th Louisiana Regt more than a
year ago at the request of the Maj Genl then Commanding La; and by the
advice of Maj Gen M. L. Smith to take charge of the Engineer Dept of
the New Orleans & Texas R. R. Co which was represented as a
military work, the result of a part of my labors on that road you have
seen. |
Since Maj Genl Magruder's arrival in this
state I have been employed by him in the defences &c on the coast,
having entire charge of the Sabine Dist. I have had the honor to have
the services which I rendered at the battles of Galveston and Sabine
Pass, favorable mention in Genl Magruder's report on the S. Pass. |
My family were driven one year ago from my
place on the Mississippi river, and are now refugees in this city. My
negroes and other property have been stolen or scattered but I am
still ready and anxious to do every thing I can in the service of my
country. I therefore request that if it be possible you will get for
me an appointment in your corps, or employment in connection with the
C. S. Engineer Corps. |
It has occurred to me that I might be of
use in such business as may be connected with the rail roads which
have been aided by Government. |
I shall be pleased to forward such
references &c as may be required. |
Hoping to hear from you |
I remain |
Your Obt Svt |
