Sir, |
I understand that Mr G. E. Walker intends
applying, through the Congressional Delegation from his state, for a
Captains Commission in the Provisional Engineers. |
Mr Walker has been for several months my principal
assistant, in the office and in the field. I have had a considerable
number of persons serving with me, but have no hesitation in saying
that, so far as my knowledge extends, he is the best Military Engineer
in the Dept of South Carolina. I should esteem it a great loss to the
Confederacy and to his State, were his services not retained in the
Department in which he has now much experience, and in which he
eminently excels.
|
I have taken the liberty of addressing
this note to you, without any request from Mr Walker himself, but from
a simple sense of duty to an able and meritorious assistant, and to
our cause. |
Very Respectfully Your obt servant |
J. C. Ives Capt C. S. Engrs |
Chief Engineer Dept So Ca & Georgia |
