Dear Sir,
|
Last fall I was engaged in the Colo W. S Ashe in his
assistant at salary of $1200 a year.
|
I told him I could not remain unless I could get enough
to justify my employing a man to attend to my private business which
would cost $1,000 my brother having died soon after I commenced with
Colo Ashe & my partner Mr Dickenson being most of his time in the
south Colo Ashe wished my services & requested me to apply to Colo
Myers for a appointment as quarter master which I did & he
endorsed it & recommended it. Colo Myers refused I then told Clo
A. I would attend at his office to all kinds of business without any
charge to the Government whenever I could spare the time. Since which
time Colo Myers has appointed two men to attend to the same business
that Colo Ashe asked him to give me & given them a commission as
Captain. The quartermaster appointed all good men -- well qualified
& I do not wish to displace them, but I would like to get an
office in the department which would pay me enough to employ a man to
attend to my auction business.
|
I would prefer a rail Road situation but it is not
material. Do not understand me as complaining of Colo Myers.
|
Yrs most respectfully

Since your appointment Colo Ashe requested me to ask you to commission
me to aid him
