| You will instead of going West &
South, as ordered by me on 1st inst., go to Raleigh and see Mr. Allen
who has a contract to make cars for Government & know when they
will be finished. The Government is now ready to furnish ironwork for
twenty cars. |
| Proceed also to Portsmouth & see Union
Car Works & say that I have steel springs and steel for springs
that he can work up into cars, which I can furnish at market price --
twenty five cents per pound. The cars with wooden springs I will
determine whether I will receive when I return to Richmond. |
| If the Union Works will pay the price,
turn over to them the requisite number of springs for twenty cars. |
