In reply to your two communications of the
4th & 6th inst. I have to inform you that your acct "For
salary from 28th Nov 1861 to same date 1862, as agent at Grand
Junction (& Coffeeville, after evacuation of former place"
&c dated "Jany 31 '63" for one thousand dollars
($1000--) will, on presentation to the post Quartermaster, be paid by
him. The acct of Mr. J
W Goodwin "From Feby 6th to Apl 2nd '62" For salary as
transportation agent at Corinth, Miss. for one hundred & fifty
five dollars & fifty five cents will be paid in like manner. The
sum of seventeen dollars & fifty cents (17.50) will also be
allowed him. |
Respectfully |
A C Myers |
Quarter Master General |
{It is uncertain who this John W.
Goodwin was. The most likely person, who was in the area at the time,
was a Major (and had been one since July of 1861). So why was he
repeatedly addressed as "Mr."? This document implies that
Mr. Goodwin was in Mobile, which was Major Goodwin's home. Finally,
Major Goodwin was Major, Superintendent of Public Works at Whistler,
Ala. from January through July, 1862. Mr. Goodwin is claiming pay for
the period February through April, 1862 -- a strange thing for a Major
to do.} |
