|
Colonel, |
Mr. Jno. W. Goodman was appointed
Transportation Agent at Corinth Miss by Maj Wm S. Ashe on February
13th 1862. Maj Ashe wrote him on 11th of April begging him to withdraw
his resignation -- after which I know nothing. |
On 18th of last October I wrote to Mr
Goodwin as follows: |
Mr. E. Ropel was here when your letter of 8th inst
arrived. He is under the impression that he has sent you your account
approved. I suppose, however, that they never reached you. |
Make out your account on form 22 in
duplicate & send Maj Ashe's letter of appointment to me & I
will try to get it paid. I succeed Maj Ashe." |
Very Respectfully |

{It is uncertain who this John W.
Goodwin was. The most likely person, who was in the area at the time,
was a Major (and had been one since July of 1861). So why was he
repeatedly addressed as "Mr."? Another document implies that
Mr. Goodwin was later in Mobile, which was Major Goodwin's home.
Finally, Major Goodwin was Major, Superintendent of Public Works at
Whistler, Ala. from January through July, 1862. In another document,
Mr. Goodwin is claiming pay for the period February through April,
1862 -- a strange thing for a Major to do.} |
