Sir, |
I have applied through Lt Genl Pemberton for a Captain's
Commission in the Engineer Corps of the Provisional Army. General
Pemberton has endorsed the application and forwarded it to the
Department at Richmond. I enclose you herewith a letter from Judge
Clayton, which I beg that you will read at your leisure.
|
I received from Genl Polk at Columbus Ky
17 Dec 1861, the appointment of Chief Engineer of the 2d District of
the Western Dept., with the rank and pay of Major, and was placed in
charge of the works at that point, Island 10, Fort Pillow &c. When
the several army corps were united at Corinth, I was continued in the
Engineer Service by Genl Beauregard and subsequently by Genl Bragg,
from whom I received the appointment of Chief Engineer of District of
the Tennessee and was assigned to duty with Genl Price. I am now
employed in the Engineer Service at this point, under Captains
Robinson & Lockett, both of whom will endorse my application. I
ask the commission to date from 17 Dec 1861, the date of my
appointment by Genl Polk. |
I am most respectfully yours |
Minor Meriwether |
