Sir, |
Enclosed I have the honor to
hand you certificate to the effect that Private S. C. Lewis is
absolutely essential & necessary to the efficient working of my
Department and have to request of you the favor that you will use your
influence to have him permanently detailed or have him appointed a
Bonded transportation agent & ordered to report to me. |
I am still trying to build the
Memphis & Charleston Rail Road We are now doing very well with the work
whenever we can get fair weather, but it either rains sleets or snows
all the while, so we are making but slow progress. I have been greatly
delayed for the want of laborers & carpenters & have applied time & time
again & only received the laborers & carpenters last Saturday & Sunday.
We have accumulated at this point a large amount of commissary stores &
have the platforms & ground here covered with Com Hospital & Ordnance
Stores with a large quantity of stores of different kinds belonging to
the Engineer Department. I believe it my duty to get the stores here &
then it is the duty of officers to whom they belong or are consigned to
take care of them. I called on Gen Hoods Inspector Gen this morning &
requested him to order the various officers to have their stores removed
from the platforms & properly taken care of. While it is not my duty to
have the Govt property stored still I do not like to see Govt property
wasted. I came here last night from the head of the road & will return
tomorrow morning. Capt Williams I have ordered to remain at Meridian &
on the line of the Mobile {& Ohio} Road &
has his hands full with transportation matters. |
Yours Respectfully |
