There are twenty Ordnance Messengers, (as per enclosed
list {not found}) who are always
traveling with stores so that it is impossible to obtain copies of
their papers of exemption till they come in. Most of them are non
domicild & the rest are disabled and discharged soldiers. All but
two or three of them reported in these two lists, have reported to
the Examining boards & Enrolling officers & their papers have been
finally acted upon, showing this legal exemption. Copies 1, 2, 3 & 4
show the details of those employed upon Surgeons Certificate & copy
No 5, by order of Genl R. E. Lee. |
Each of the gentlemen mentioned herein in consequence of
their long experience, occupy positions which it is almost
impossible to fill without serious detriment to the service if
inexperienced persons are employed in their stead. |
Very Respectfully |
D. H. Wood |
