Major Genl J. F. Gilmer |
|
General, |
I am informed that Captain Walker Railroad Commissioner
for this Department is dead, and I write to ask for the position thus
made vacant by his death being informed the appointed position belongs
to you. I have been serving in the Engineer Corps of the Army by
appointment of various Generals with the rank of Major since Dec 1861
and you may perhaps remember me. My profession is that of Railway
Engineer in which I have 12 or 13 years experience & have had
charge as Chief Engineer of some important works in the South; and I
think I could discharge the duties of the position sought, satisfactorily
to the Government. If letters of reference are
required they are on file in the Bureau at Richmond with my
application for Commission in the Engineer Department. May I ask the
favor of an immediate reply?

Respectfully |
Minor Meriwether |
Major J. L. Champneys of the Engineer Corps now in
Charleston can tell you about me. |
