Sir, |
A letter dated Goldsboro, North Carolina,
July 10th 1863, addressed by Major Wm. W. Morrison, C. S. to the
Commissary General, contains the following statement: |
"During the recent raid of the Enemy
on the Wilmington & Weldon Rail Road, about 15000 pounds {one
car load} of Bacon belonging to the Government were destroyed
at Warsaw Depot. J. D. Southerland, Commissary Agent, who purchased
the Bacon, informs me that he has been urging the Rail Road Agents to
ship it to me at this place for over two months and has also called
the attention of the President of the Road to the matter." |
This letter has been referred to me by
Colonel Northrop Commissary General, with the request that the cost of
the Bacon destroyed be charged to the Wilmington & Weldon Rail
Road Company. Before taking any action on the case, I desire you to be
informed of the position taken by Major Morrison, C. S. and have to
request that you will communicate with me, furnishing at the same time
a statement of your own. |
