Quarter Master General's Department
Richmond, June 29th 1864

Col. J. S. Corley
Ch Qr Master

Sir,
Your dispatch of yesterday was not handed me until this morning. As soon as I find that the corn at Weldon can reach Petersburg, I will arrange to have your daily wants supplied out of that marked for the Commissary, if we have any there. But I am satisfied the arrivals at Weldon since the date of Capt. Venable's dispatch forwarded by you, have placed us on a different footing at that depot. I trust you will be able soon to haul from the bridge on the Weldon Road {the Petersburg RR}; as we cannot hope to see the {Richmond &} Danville Road opened again for ten days at least. The damage is very great, but not yet exactly ascertained.
If we find it necessary to put on a train to run over the "gap" on this Road, how many teams can you furnish? It may be the only method of supplying ourselves for these ten days, & I wish to put on such a train the moment it is ascertained that it is practicable. We have no surplus trains on hand, & you must therefore help us all you can.
As soon as the Danville Road is open, you will be supplied from Burkesville by the Southside Road. Until that happens (unless you can get something from Weldon) you must depend on what you can collect around you, with such supplies in addition as we can gather on the line of the Canal & {Virginia} Central RR. Officers & Agents have been sent already for this purpose, & I hope for some result very soon.
A. R. Lawton, Q. M. G.
