Sir, |
Your letter of the 25th instant, was
referred to Major D. H. Wood, in charge of the transportation office
in this city, for report; who has returned it with the following
endorsement: |
"Respectfully returned with the
remark that the regular office hours are from 9 to 3 and 6 to 8, which
suits the arrival and departure of cars, and has worked well for two
years. A clerk and watchman sleep at the office, and transact much
business out of office hours. By orders, soldiers are now taken to
hospitals, and messengers sent with their furloughs to get
transportation and passports. If you think it best to open the office
earlier, or keep it open later, it will be done, although the wear
upon one set of clerks may be too great for long endurance." |
