Sir, |
The rate of ten dollars per team per day, for the use
of Government transportation, employed in hauling wood for the
{Virginia} Central Rail Road is not
satisfactory to the authorities of the Company. |
Various reasons are stated by the President, Colonel
Fontaine, why a less rate, and a different mode of payment should be
adopted, as for example, by paying an agreed sum per cord. |
These details cannot be determined upon at this office,
and the whole subject is referred to you, that you may make such
arrangement with the Rail Road authorities as will be satisfactory to
them, and at the same time just to the Government. |
Of course, it will be stipulated that these teams are
to be employed by the Rail Road, only so long as their wood is not
required for the Government. |
