Sir, |
Your letter of the 6th instant, to Colonel
W. M. Wadley (marked confidential) was submitted to the Secretary of War
and by him referred to this office. |
The ticket or coupon of the Montgomery &
West Point Rail Road is in proper form, but it is objectionable because
it has no number upon it, corresponding with the order of the Quarter
Master; and the number of seats, and car loads of freights should have
been written out in full, instead of the abbreviated pencil marks. These
are such apparent faults that the Quarter Master who audited the
accounts of this Road should have long since called attention to them
and had them corrected. A new system of transportation both for persons
and freights is about to be put into operation at each post, which will
remedy similar difficulties. I return the coupon, that it may be
ascertained from the Quarter Master at Montgomery, whether four or five
car load of freights were ordered. |
I desire to say that I do not perceive why a matter of
direct public interest was made the subject of a confidential
communication to Colonel Wadley, instead of being reported officially. |
