Sir, |

In relation to the Forage lost in course of Shipment by
the Richmond & Danville Rail Road Company: as the Company admits the
receipt of the forage, it is incumbent on its agents to acquit
themselves of responsibility by showing a delivery to some officer of
Government agent. Failing to do that the value thereof will be charged
to the transportation account of the road in the next statement. To that
end enclose the receipts, or a copy thereof to Lieutenant Colonel A. F.
Cone, Depot Quarter Master, at this point, who audits and adjusts the
account of that road, and accompany the same with a statement similar to
that forwarded to this office. In this way the Government will be
indemnified, and you can obtain a credit for the loss, in the settlement
of your account. |
