Quartermaster General's Department
Richmond, 4th Apr 1862

Maj Wm Lamb
QM Wilmington N C

Sir,
You will send an officer to get possession of the tug "Cotton Plant" on the Roanoke in order to secure the corn on that river below Halifax. The tug is in charge of Peter E Smith and his brother George A Smith is represented to be a most valuable assistant. Their services may be engaged by the officer you dispatch upon this duty.
You will direct the corn required at Kingston to be sent to that place, and you will hire whatever quantity may be needed at other points in Genl Holms' command, delivered to the proper Quarter Masters at those points.
If there should remain a surplus of corn after those points have been supplied, send it to Weldon or wherever you ascertain that it is required.
See Majr Ashe and arrange for the transportation of the corn from Halifax as the store houses are said to be free. Use dispatch in the business, and report your action under this order promptly by letter.
