Sir, |
I have ascertained on inquiry that no account for
transportation has ever been filed, at this point, to the Wilmington &
Manchester Rail Road Company. A small one amounting to $219 has been
audited for settlement, and in that there is one item only for the Month
of May 1861. |
The vouchers do not appear to be for the State of North
Carolina, some purport to be for service to the State of South Carolina;
but they are ??? on an affidavit made by the Treasurer of the road
alleging that the State of South Carolina was mentioned by mistake, and
that the services were rendered to the Confederate States. |
I cannot authorize the payment of the
claim you prefer on behalf of your company for $6114 43/100 for services
rendered prior to the adoption of the Ordnance of Secession. It belongs
to that class of claims, which will doubtless be provided for in the
future. |
