Genl., |
Your communication of 12th
ult. relative to the forwarding of corn, purchased by the State of
Georgia for indigent families within her borders & awaiting
shipment at Selma Ala., has been handed me by the Hon. Jno. W. H.
Underwood, & contents most carefully considered. I have every
desire to afford to the State of Georgia all the assistance in my
power in bringing forward this corn, not only from an earnest sympathy
with the Benevolence of the undertaking, but also because every bushel
brought from Alabama leaves that much more in South Western Georgia
available to the support of the armies now subsisted from there. For
my action on your letter, I beg leave to refer you to the enclosed
copy of instructions sent both to Maj. Hillyer at Selma & Maj.
Harris at Montgomery. |
