Quartermaster General's Department |
Richmond, March 9th 1863 |

Mr. John Lewis |
Cartersville, Geo. |
|
Sir, |
I have received your letter of the 2d
instant, asking that transportation may be secured to you for a lot of
Corn and Hay from Macon, Georgia, to Carterville, in view of the facts
that you are making under contract large supplies for the army, and
that the receipt of these articles is essential to the execution
thereof. |
The Secretary of War has prescribed as a
general rule that preference will only be asked for Government
freight, leaving individuals, including public contractors, to arrange
as best they can with the Rail Road Companies for the transportation
of what they need. Had I charge of this matter now, I would recommend
your application to the favorable action of the Secretary of War; but
it has been transferred to the management of Colonel Wadley, and I
would advise you to make your application to him. He can be addressed
at Augusta, Georgia. |
