"We have been informed by an officer of the Va & Tenn
R. R., at Bristol, known to us to be a highly respectable gentleman, of
the following transaction, which needs official investigation. After
referring to the instructions issued to officers of the road respecting
the shipment of supplies, he says: "I detected this morning three
large boxes (1,800 lbs) marked 'army clothing' &c, valued at $4,000 to
Maj J. Glover Q M Lynchburg Va." Maj. Glover has been Ch Q Master for
this District for two years past. The Commissary agent here has seized
the articles. When Maj G. was notified of this matter he was speechless;
so says the Commissary Agt. & in a few moments afterwards he sent a man
to the Express office to claim the bacon." Our informant believes that
the Govt Q Master has been guilty of a fraud to speculate on bacon,
which the soldiers, whose interest it is his bounden duty to guard,
badly need. We trust this matter will be investigated, & if this officer
has been so unfaithful to his trust as appearances would indicate, he
should be cashiered..." |
