Quarter Master General's Department |
Richmond, Feb 9th 1864 |

Maj. Edwd McMahon QM |
Dublin Dept. Virginia |
|
Your letter of Feb 2nd 1864
in regard to the supply of forage for your district and the
transportation which may be available, when the present supply is exhausted,
as also a letter from Captain M. B. Tate AQM at Abingdon Va. of same
date on the same subject and asking authority to send an agent to
Georgia to purchase supplies of Forage for his place have been
received. |
There is no necessity and the
interests of the service forbid that agent should be sent to Georgia
to buy forage. The quantity of Corn already secured in that State, by
officers under the orders of Maj. Carrington is greatly in excess of
that transported by the Rail Road at present. If any other Railway
communication between Georgia and Tennessee except that through North
Carolina & Virginia shall be opened, corn can be turned over to
you in Georgia by Major Carrington. If however, we are confined to the
present routes, then all the corn for which transportation can be had
(other than that for Wilmington, Petersburg, Richmond & the Army
of Northern Virginia) will be shipped to Burkesville at the junction
of the South Side {Rail Road} and {Richmond
&} Danville Rail Road to be then distributed as the
emergencies of the service may require. You will communicate so much
of this letter as is necessary to Captain Tate A. Q. M. at Abingdon
Virginia. |
Very Respectfully |
Your Obedient Servant |
A. R. Lawton, Q. M. Genl. |
