General, |
Rumor and some statements in the
newspapers attribute to the Post Quarter Master recently stationed at
Bristol, Tennessee, gross dereliction of duty in not having the public
stores, in his charge, removed before that place fell into the hands of
the enemy some time since. I also have heard intimations that Captain
Lucas abandoned his post, unnecessarily, and exhibited a want of proper
firmness and officer-like conduct on that occasion. |
I have no means of knowing how far these
reports are true, and I deem it due to my Department, that they should
be investigated, with promptness. I have, therefore, to request that you
will direct, through your Inspector General, or otherwise, a full
investigation to be made in regard to Captain Lucas' conduct, at as
early a date as may be convenient, and that the results of his
examination may be transmitted to this Bureau. |
