In my endorsement on your letter, I stated
what were the obstacles that prevented this Dept. from complying with
your request. We have been compelled to refuse other companies much
further off from the sources of supply than your own. Much of the
Government corn is obtained by impressment, and the law does not
authorise that be one except for the supply of the army and great
complaint would arise were we, while impressing on the one hand, on the
other to part with a portion of our supply to a R. R. company. |
