Quartermaster General's Department
Richmond, January 23d 1862

Mr. L. R. Lucas
Agent QM Dept.
Bristol, Tenn.

Sir,
I am in receipt of your letter of the 19th inst. representing the delay that has occurred in the transportation of freights & supplies, near the burnt bridge over the Holston River; and speaking of the just importance of having forwarded, in advance of other articles, a lot of salt on its way from Nashville to Knoxville. As requested by you, I send you authority to have this done. It is important that the Hog packers of the country you refer to should obtain a supply of salt & hence I give that article the preference over others, tho it is a delicate matter to interfere with the general transportation at a time when it is strained, to respond to the wants of the services.
A. C. Myers, Q. M. General

Enclosed in the above letter:

The rail road authorities between Nashville & Knoxville will allow Mr. L. R. Lucas, transportation agent of this department, to bring to the latter point, a supply of salt, in advance of other articles being transported over the route.
