Sir, |
A report from Major Lamb, Quarter Master
at Wilmington, N. C. advises the Department that the failure of the
railroads to transport stores for that post occasions him much
concern. He states he is entirely without a supply of corn, while if
the railroads had furnished prompt transportation, he would have
nearly 6000 bushels on hand {about 21 carloads}.
He also mentions that a number of stores have been on the way from
Charleston nearly a month, and other stores purchased by the
department are detained somewhere greatly to the detriment of the
service. Major Lamb does not refer specifically to your road, but I
bring his statement to your notice that you may have inquiry made if
these delays have occurred on the line of your road, and, if so issue
such instructions as will prevent their reoccurrence. |
