Sir, |
Major Cameron, Quarter Master, at
Wilmington, reports that the amount of cotton needed, for the purchase
of shoes recently made at that point on Government account, is 312,646
1/3 lbs {approximately 20 carloads}.
The contract calls for its receipt at Wilmington by the 1st day of
February. You said there would be no trouble, if the cotton was at
Augusta. Mr. Seixas, whom I have just seen, states that it is there,
there being at this date some 2660 Bales there {approximately
67 carloads} belonging to this Department, in the custody of
Mr. T. W. Johnson, Agent. Please give this matter your attention that
there may be no disappointment to the parties in whose favor this
Department has come under the obligation referred to. If it can be
delivered a few days in advance of the expiration of the month; so as
to admit of its being compressed, it will be better. |
