Dear Sir,
Your favor of 12th Inst. was received today. I was surprised to hear that you had not heard from me relative to your request while visiting this place. I wrote you regarding the C. S. A. cars a few days after the receipt of your letter from Atlanta, and also directed it, as you requested, to Augusta, Ga in care of Geo. Younge, Esq. I wrote you in answer to yours of the 16th ult. from Raleigh, N. C. and sent it by W. Scott in the Q. M. Dept here, requesting him to deliver it directly to you & in case he did not see you to drop it in the Post Office, I cannot think how it failed reaching you. I have the numbers of cars marked C. S. A. in use by Navy Dpt as follows: Nos. 8, 10,11,12,13,14,15,16 1st, 16 2nd, 18, 19, 20, 31, 9, 4 & 6. These are the only cars that I have been enabled to find, most of which have been returned to Augusta. A few of them are still at the river, but cannot be brought over until the Lookout bridge is finished which was destroyed a few weeks since by high???. It will be completed in a few days.
Cars No 6 & 12 are here now. No. 18 broke down on a side track about 3 miles this side of Stevenson. I will have it repaired and returned.
Accept my thanks for the interest you have taken in my welfare & rest assured that if industry & energy are the necessary requisites, I will retain your confidence & esteem.
I will endeavor to procure a recommendation from the com officer here although he is an entire ot?? to me and my friends.
I will give my attention to getting up the cars.
It is currently rumored here today that Yanks have fallen back & that our Cavalry are in Murfreesboro' this morning.
