Respectfully returned to QM Genl. The Egypt
mine has been sufficiently repaired from the explosion to resume work
with a force of 14 miners -- sufficient only to meet the most urgent
requisitions of the Navy for Charleston harbor -- and for Govt blockade
runners and railroad machine shops at Wilmington. If the want of the
Greenville shops are considered paramount it is requested that the
Secretary will designate which of the above requisitions may be
suspended. Could a few miners be procured in South Carolina the
difficulty would be met. Details for coal mines have been declined. |
