Colonel, |
I would respectfully say, in
reference to the enclosed letter, that the Rail Road Co. {the
Richmond & Petersburg RR} demands over $4 freight on the
box in question, tho' they are unable to say from whence the box came,
and will give no satisfactory reason for making such charge. We have
offered payment of freight from Petersburg to this place, which they
refuse to take. Now, for anything we know, transportation had been
furnished for this box, ??? the representation of the Company to the
contrary is not to be relied on in as much as day before yesterday
they demanded transportation on a lot of Sulphur & Tin brought
here by Special Messenger from Augusta, and it required considerable
argument before they would be, or could be convinced they were in
error. There is now at the Rail road Depot, a box containing 3 sets of
Artillery Harnessers, no doubt from Clarksville which they also refuse
to deliver without transportation. We have no doubt transportation was
furnished for through Clarksville, but I have written to the
Superintendent there on the subject and expect an answer tomorrow.
This harness we suppose to be a part of that made there by Mr.
Crawford by direction of the Bureau. |
Very Respectfully |
