Statement relative to transportation of
subsistence stores &c. Maj Allen can supply the army in Va with corn &
partially with Bacon, Molasses, Peas & Beef. But delays &c of
transportation must be corrected. Suggests that cars from roads in hands
of the enemy be repaired, which can be done by using naval
establishments at Columbus & Charlotte exclusively for the purpose.
Would be a great relief to take off all passenger trains daily (the QR
informed that freight trains occupy 30 days in running to Wilmington &
back. The country tributary to Montgomery will meet the requirements of
Gen Johnston's army to a great extent. Refd by Sec of War. |
