Know all men by these presents, that I, Peter G. Evans,
do hereby constitute, nominate and appoint, Julius A. Gray of the town
of Greensboro, North Carolina, my agent and attorney in fact, for me,
and in my name, to receive and receipt for, all monies due me, for the
hire of slaves, for the year 1862, from the Confederate States. Said
slaves having been employed on the survey for a Rail Road {the
Piedmont RR} from Danville Va. to Greensboro N. C. And I hereby
ratify and confirm all acts and receipts done and granted by the said
Julius A. Gray as my Agent and Attorney in fact, to the said
Confederate States or their agent or engineer on said survey. Hereby
ratified and confirming whatever my said agent has done, or shall
hereafter as, in the receipt of the hire of said slaves, in as full
and ample a manner as if I were personally present at the doing
thereof. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal This
