Sir, |
I beg leave to ask that
privates Wm. Gay Co. "D" 16th Va Infantry and Henry G. Chase Co "C" 12th
Va. Infty be detailed and ordered to report to Jas. C. Sprigg Master of
Road, Petersburg Va for duty in the service of the "Norfolk & Petersburg
Rail Road Co." These two men are carpenters and their services are
indispensible to keeping up the Road and its Rolling Stock. The Company
has but one carpenter now in its employ and this man will be turned over
to the Conscript officer at Petersburg upon the detail of the 2 men Gay
& Chase I have asked for. Besides, I would state, that this Rail Rd
Company has in its employ only 18 men in al, of all ages and classes,
which by the terms of the "Exemption Law" 36 men may be employed, Since
there are 36 miles of this Road worked and mainly for Government
purposes. |
