Dear Sir, |
The enclosed order signed by Albert J Smith Princl
Quarter Master Westn Dir. was handed to me yesterday. I at once placed
in charge of Mr J E Sands, the representative of Mr Fleece, the
running of all trains, transportation &c. |
The arrangement is entirely satisfactory to me, as it
will ensure the use of the Locomotives and cars heretofore on Memphis
Branch, on the Main Stem, where the transportation has been immense.
I am informed that the freight business on Memphis Branch is very
light. Not averaging over two or three cars per week. If the
transportation has not been performed with as much safety and dispatch
as was possible with the means at our command, I am not aware of it,
Whether ordered in the day or night. No complaint has been made to me.
Some casualties have occurred, not more services in their character
however, than has often happened upon the best managed Rail roads in
time of peace, when and where every train could be run by known
rules and schedules. |
We have gone through the heavy transportation and find
some of the Engines improved by repairs while others have suffered for
want of repairs. Not being able to get the Engine on the track at
later run off without stopping some important transportation, as to be
it required the use of another Engine, and some could be spared. |
But ??? with use of Engines (Five I understand) from
Memphis Branch, the condition of Engines on Main line can be greatly
improved and not interrupt the transportation. I think the road bed
has been fully kept up. At the close of this month I shall be ready to
make a full and detail statement of former management, which I hope
will be satisfactory. |
Very Respectfully |
Your obt Svt |
