Board met -- present, F. M. White, Sledge,
McRay, Robertson, Rayburn, Howard, Graham. |
At a called meeting of the president and
directors of the Mississippi & Tennessee railroad, this day held
in reference to charges set forth against Mr. Hough by the petition of
citizens of Horn Lake, it was resolved: That, after hearing the
evidence of the committee of said petitioners, who appeared before
them, that we have the greatest respect for the honest and patriotic
intentions of the petitioners, and, like them, we think the greatest
caution and vigilance should be exercised, not only in the employment
of northern men, but in our intercourse with them in every way; but we
have not been able to see anything in the evidence to condemn Mr.
Hough. His remarks, which appear to have been offensive so far as the
evidence shows, were such as were common at the time among our most
loyal citizens. The citizens of Horn Lake may rest assured that the
president and directors of the road will use all the means in their
power to detect disloyalty to the South in all men in their
employment. |
