{The Piedmont RR opened through
from Greensboro to Danville on May 20. The 2 large bodies of troops are
probably the brigades of Wise and Colquitt, moving from Charleston to
Richmond; the fifteen miles travelled indicates the length of the road
in operation early in the month, north from Greensboro. The Hampton
Legion moved from Columbia to Richmond at the same time, but was
ordered to march between Greensboro and Danville. Once the road was
completely open, it was reserved for freight (400,000 lbs per day wanted
in Danville) and troops were sent through Raleigh and Petersburg.} |
{Since a car carried roughly
16,000 pounds, the above trips required the following number of cars for
the Freight lines: 39, 25, 8, 36, 181} |
{The above numbers are for only
the Manassas Gap RR trains. The Piedmont RR had its own trains and there
may have been North Carolina RR trains used, too} |
