On the 14th day of March 1862,
I was ordered by Capt R. J. Echols, A. Q. M. at Strasburg to take
charge of five hundred & twenty four barrels of flour, then on the
cars (the flour was brought from Piedmont Happy Creek Markham &
River Stations) and proceed to Mt. Jackson: have it unloaded and
stored in the best place I could find. The flour was unloaded on
Sunday the 16th in my absence: it was placed on the vacant lot
ajoining the depot: Capt Echols being ordered to New Market, left me
at Mt Jackson to attend to the forwarding of the flour to Staunton. On
the 20th I recd of Capt R. J. Echols fourteen wagons to be loaded with
flour, but was ordered by Maj. John A Harman Chf Q. M. V. D. to turn
over all the transportation in my possession belonging to Capt Echols
to Maj Hawks. I did so. I left Mt Jackson on the 23rd but before I
left all the flour had been removed, some of it I am sure and I think
the whole of it by Capt F A Briscoe AQM of the post. The above is a
correct statement according to the best of my knowledge and belief. |
