John McDonald a Conductor for the Manassas Gap R. Rd. Coy
appears before me & maketh oath |
That in 1st May 1863 he was directed by Hugh Rice Sup MG
RRd to proceed to the Virginia Central and Orange & Alexandria
& Richmond & Fredericksburg R Roads & remove to Richmond
all the cars belonging to the MGRRd which had been employed by the
Government on these Roads. That his orders were to have them collected
& brought to Richmond with all possible haste & Dispatch. |
That he did so, with all the energy & despatch in his
posses, but, that, owning to the disabled condition in which he found
the cars, The delays in execution in getting mechanics to render them
fit for removal. The difficulties of having them in their crippled
state, ??? in consequence of the movements of Genl Lee's army to &
from Pennsylvania & in consequence, the difficulty he met with in
retaining the mechanics so as to get the cars fit for removal, all
combined, prevented his having it in his power to reach Richmond
sooner than 13th Sept 1863. |
The said McDonald maketh this affidavit in order to show
to said Rice, that all that was in his power to do, ??? by the aforesaid
delays & difficulties, was done by him, & accomplished with as
much haste & at as little delay as could be done by him. |
Given under my hand & seal this 4 March 63 |
