Captain, |
Acting under the instructions of Col.
Gorgas Chief of Ordnance, I shall forward to you in a few days, all the
Stocking Machines at this Armory which are to be re-erected and put to
work in the Armory under your charge. Please arrange for suitable
shelter for the cases in which this machinery is packed, pending
arrangements for its final location, in which I will assist you at the
proper time. There will be about 5 Box Car loads in all, inclusive of
two machines I shall send you for sawing out rough stocks from the
plank. Two workmen who have worked this machinery will accompany it as
Special Messengers and they will be transferred permanently to you.
There were 7 or 8 in all but the rest have either deserted died or
otherwise become unavailable. You will have to educate others. |
I think your large Engine will furnish
sufficient power to drive this additional machinery, and it will be
necessary to erect a frame building of one story high, about 130 x 35
feet so located in relation to your engine that the power can be
introduced in it conveniently. It would be well for you to ??? this
subject and have your suggestions matured by the time I call upon you.
Also make arrangements for prompt supply of lumber, as soon as the bill
can be made out. Your milling machines will go forward with the Stock
Machines. |
I hope you are pressing on the supply of
rough gunstocks. I have notice of the consignment to me of two lots of
rough gunstocks, as below. One lot from Capt Brenizer Comdg Arsenal at
Salisbury N. C. of 99 Stocks and another lot from Maj. F. F. Jones Comdg
Richmond Armory of 715 Stocks. I have requested the Qr Masters at
Kingsville and Augusta to intercept these Stocks and to forward them to
you at Columbia. |
I am Captain |
Respectfully Your Obdt. Svt. |
